ON THE FIRST SUNDAY of the Great Fast our Church celebrates the triumph of Orthodoxy, the victory of true Christian teaching over all perversions and distortions thereof—heresies and false teachings. On the second Sunday of the Great Fast it is as though this triumph of Orthodoxy is repeated and deepened in connection with the celebration of the memory of one of the greatest pillars of Orthodoxy, the hierarch Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, who by his grace-bearing eloquence and the example of his highly ascetic private life put to shame the teachers of falsehood who dared reject the very essence of.Orthodoxy, the podvig of prayer and fasting, which enlightens the human mind with the light of grace and makes it a communicant of the divine glory.

20121107 Gvosdev on Orthodoxy and Politics

The hits keep coming!  After I share some of my thoughts on how to approach democratic politics as a member of a minority faith that has universalist moral truth claims (hint: I love the U.S. Constitution), I share an awesome interview with Professor Nick Gvosdev.  He gives historical and theological hope for a “third way” […]

Homily – On Unity (Ephesians 2: 14-22)

The Reading from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Ephesians. [2:14-22]: Christ is our peace, Who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, * by abolishing in His Flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in […]

Homily (notes) on Lazarus and the Rich Man

A bit about bad investments. Wasted money – spending money and time on things that don’t work out We should avoid bad investments If we get reliable investment tips and warnings, we should take them seriously and act on them!  The Rich Man in today’s parable made a bad investment He wasted a lot of […]

Why do Orthodox Christians Participate in “Pagan” Activities?

We have some Jehovah’s Witnesses that come by the rectory pretty regularly (you have to admire their persistent optimism!). Theologically, Jehovah’s Witnesses are latter-day followers of the heretic Arius: they do not believe that Jesus Christ is the uncreated, only-begotten Son of God, One of the Holy Trinity. But that is not the point for […]

Homily – The Woman of Nain Loses (and regains) Her Son

Lord willing, I’ll eventually get to flesh out these notes from my homily.  But even if not, maybe you will still find these useful.  I’ll push it up on the list of things to do if there is enough interest. St. Luke 7:11-16. Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city […]

Homily: The Cosmic Implications of the Golden Rule

St. Luke 6:31-36 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? […]

An Orthodox Plea for Limited Government

In my last post, I shared my notes for the panel on politics and religion.  The talks went well.  I only had five minutes, so I didn’t get to everything during my presentation.  I was, however, able to work most of the main points during the Q & A.  This is pretty much what I […]

Draft Notes for a Talk on Orthodoxy, Politics, and Religion

The URI Chaplains’ Association, of which I am a member, is putting on a multi-faith panel discussion entitled “The Unmentionables: religion and politics.”  I get to present the Orthodox experience.  Here’s a draft of my notes.  If you comment quick enough, you can have an impact on my presentation.  I sure would appreciate the help! […]

Homily notes for 17th Sunday after Pentecost St. Matthew 15.21-28 , The Canaanite Woman (whom Jesus called a “dog”) Gospel: Then Jesus left and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried; “have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; for my daughter […]
